When searching for your chuppah rental in NJ and beyond, look no further than Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah. This business focuses exclusively on chuppah rentals! Founded by a passionate advocate for Jewish education, customs, and traditions, Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah specializes in creating stunning centerpieces for your special day. I was excited to chat with Melissa to learn more about her journey and the inspiration behind her thriving business.
Melissa’s path to becoming a chuppah designer & renter was not not something she ever expected. After graduating from Montclair State University with a BA in Theatre, she found herself questioning her career choice. It was during the planning of her own wedding in April 2022 that Melissa and her husband encountered a problem. They couldn’t find a chuppah rental that fit the vibe of their rustic, yet elegant country club wedding.
I was working as an esthetician while planning my wedding. While planning, we could not find a chuppah that fit the vibe we were looking for. Everything I could find was either made from flimsy PVC pipes or just looked shoddy. So, my husband, Jason, decided to build us one. One March morning, he cut down some birch trees (with permission!) and built us the beautiful birch chuppah that we used on our wedding day.
As our florist was decorating our venue, she asked us where we got our chuppah. She said it was one of the nicest, sturdiest chuppahs she has worked with. She was shocked to find out that my husband built it. She made a passing joke about starting a business and I took the idea and I ran with it!
Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah was born just five days (!!) after their wedding on May 5, 2022. They offer top-quality chuppah rental services in NJ and other east-coast clientele. They serve couples in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Delaware, and beyond.
Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah offers a variety of chuppah styles to suit every couple’s vision and venue. From the popular birch chuppah to the modern copper and timeless gold designs, Melissa works closely with couples. She aims to help them select the perfect chuppah for their special day. Melissa explains how her background in theater has, perhaps surprisingly, helped her run her chuppah rental business:
As a Theatre Major at MSU, I spent a good amount of time learning set design, lighting design and also costume design. My husband and I added a chuppah decorating service to our rental company and I love letting my creativity shine! We offer faux floral rentals as well as design implementation to help bring your vision to life.
We offer a wide range of different chuppah styles. Our birch chuppah (that we used at our wedding!) is the most popular because it is the most neutral/versatile. My husband and I got married indoors in a ballroom and it looked amazing and it also looks amazing in gardens and on patios as well! If you’re getting married in April/May during the rainy season, I always suggest birch, because if you have to move your ceremony inside I guarantee it will look amazing indoors.
Our gold chuppah is so timeless as it can be draped in all white chiffon drapery, essentially making it a blank canvas for any kind of floral design.
Our Copper chuppah is much more modern and gives off an industrial esthetic. I’ve seen the popularity of copper chuppahs grow within the last 3 years!
What sets Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah apart from other chuppah rental NJ companies is the personal touch they provide. “At Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah, we ONLY specialize in chuppahs,” Melissa emphasized. “We take the time to get to know our clients so we can understand their vision for their ceremony and help them select the perfect chuppah!”
We went into our first wedding season with only one birch chuppah and we will be going into our 3rd season with 6 (six!!) chuppahs. Our different models are: Birch (most popular), Copper, Gold, Cedar (coming this September) and two sizes of handheld birch chuppahs: small, for if you just want you, your partner and officiant under it and a large model for if you want your parents to stand under the chuppah with you as well. All of our chuppahs come with a sheer white canopy, but you are welcomed to use your own canopy or tallit!
“I always ask my clients what their vision is,” Melissa shared. “Are they going for an outdoor ceremony? Golf course? Woods? Garden? Patio? Are they getting married in a ballroom? At a museum? In an Atrium?” She believes their birch chuppah is the most popular due to its versatility, looking stunning in both indoor and outdoor settings.
From the initial inquiry to the day of the wedding, couples work directly with Melissa. On wedding day, Melissa and her husband personally set up the chuppah. “We try to make it as personal an experience as possible!” she added.
The chuppah holds deep symbolism in Jewish weddings. Melissa explained, “The chuppah is essentially the centerpiece of a Jewish wedding ceremony. In some instances, the word “ceremony” is just replaced with ‘chuppah.'”
A chuppah is a canopy with four posts, open on all sides, and topped with a fabric canopy or tallit (Jewish prayer shawl). It symbolizes the home a couple will build together and the hospitality they will extend to their guests, much like the tent of Abraham and Sarah, which was open on all sides to welcome people into their home.
Melissa also shared that the chuppah provides an opportunity for family and friends to be involved in the ceremony, and that finding a chuppah rental in NJ or near your hometown can be meaningful in more than one way. “Many people use their parents’ or grandparents’ tallit for a canopy,” she said. “You can also rent a handheld chuppah from us, which is a great way to honor four people in your life to help hold it and partake in your ceremony!”
For Melissa, the most rewarding part of being involved in a couple’s special day and running a business for chuppah rentals in NJ is seeing their faces when they first lay eyes on their chuppah. “It’s a really great feeling knowing you were a part of such a special moment,” she shared. “Also, knowing that couples are going to have these photos of themselves under a chuppah that my husband and I made on their walls forever is very special.”
Looking to the future, Melissa envisions expanding her chuppah rental in NJ design offerings. She’s particularly excited about their new cedar chuppah, which will be their largest frame yet at 7ft x 7ft x 7ft.
When searching for a chuppah rental in New Jersey, Philadelphia, or Delaware Mr. & Mrs. Chuppah stands out as a top choice for couples looking to create a meaningful and beautiful wedding ceremony. With their personalized approach, dedication to craftsmanship, and passion for Jewish traditions, Melissa and her husband are there to bring your wedding vision to life!
