Specializing in Jewish weddings & celebrating all love. Take me to photograph your wedding NYC, LA, Boston, anywhere!
If you’ve been to a wedding recently, there’s a chance you’ve seen one of the newest wedding trends in action: a live wedding artist! These talented artists create one-of-a-kind, real-time masterpieces during your big day. Not only do guests get to watch the artist create magic at the reception, but the couple will go home with a custom piece of art!
I recently chatted with Michal Neiman, an talented live wedding artist whose journey from casual sketcher to professional artist is as inspiring as her work.
For Michal, art has always been a vital form of self-expression. However, it was an unexpected experience that set her on the path to becoming a live wedding artist.
“A few years ago, I sketched a few musicians at a small concert in New York,” Michal recalls. “Their reactions were so genuine and heartwarming, it made me want to keep capturing magical moments for people with my sketches. And what better time to do that than at a wedding!”
This serendipitous moment sparked a passion that would eventually lead Michal to specialize in live wedding artistry.
Michal’s artistic journey took a significant turn during her time at Camp Simcha, a summer camp for children with serious illnesses. For a decade, she worked on creating immersive sets for the camp’s daily themes, an experience that profoundly impacted her approach to art.
“Working at Simcha completely reframed my view of art and creativity as something to be shared and to help uplift others,” Michal explains. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to do as a live wedding artist.”
As a live wedding artist, Michal has the unique ability to capture the emotion and energy of a couple’s wedding day in a way that photographs alone cannot. Her process typically involves:
“The best part of being a live wedding artist is definitely the reactions I get from the couple,” Michal shares. “It’s always a little nerve-wracking, but I’ve only received positive feedback so far.”
The best part of sketching at weddings is definitely the reactions I get from the couple. It’s always a little scary not knowing how they’ll react but I’ve only received positive feedback so far, so I guess I’m doing something right. Second to that is the interactions I’ve had with the guests who watch the process and give the loveliest feedback. I’ll usually take a few pictures on my phone of meaningful moments at the beginning of the wedding, like the bedeken, or first look, or the chuppah, then sit at a table off to the side to work on the sketch until after the first or second dance. I’ve also learned to film lots of little moments throughout the wedding to make a short video that captures the energy of the day and mix those with clips of my drawing process. It makes for a great memory for me and for the couple.
Transitioning from casual sketching to professional live wedding artistry has presented its own set of challenges for Michal. She’s had to adopt a more business-oriented mindset and consider how to market her unique skills within the competitive wedding industry.
“I’ve certainly had to shift to more of a business mindset and think about how I’d want to market my craft within the wedding industry,” Michal admits. “I’m constantly looking for ways to expand my services and create even more memorable experiences for couples.”
Michal is grateful for the support she’s received from family and friends. She shares: “I wouldn’t have accomplished so much of my work had it not been for the constant support of people who believed in me and directed me to meaningful projects that I am so proud of. It’s pretty intimidating to enter a new industry, even if you have all the skills to back you up, but the encouragement I’ve been getting from my family and community makes me feel like I really can be successful.”
As a pediatric nurse by profession, Michal faces the additional challenge of balancing her artistic pursuits with her medical career. She’s found that her nursing experience has enhanced her work as a live wedding artist in unexpected ways.
“Nursing has been an incredible growth curve in empathy, responsibility, and attention to detail, that I’ve found so applicable in my art,” Michal reflects. “I feel most fulfilled when I know that my work has made a positive impact on people, no matter what form that work takes.”
To create more time for her art, Michal has transitioned to a per diem nursing schedule, allowing her to take on more live wedding artist bookings.
Looking ahead, Michal has ambitious goals for her career as a live wedding artist. She aims to expand her portfolio and offer more comprehensive services to couples.
“I would love to continue building up my portfolio,” Michal enthuses. “Between creating a lasting memorable gift and having amazing interactions with couples and guests, it feels like an exciting next step in my journey as a live wedding artist.”
Michal Neiman’s evolution from casual sketcher to professional live wedding artist is a testament to the power of following one’s passion. By combining her artistic talent with her desire to create meaningful experiences for others, she’s carved out a unique niche in the wedding industry.
For couples looking to add a touch of artistry to their special day, a live wedding artist like Michal offers an experience that guests are sure to remember. Not only do you receive a beautiful, personalized piece of art, but you also get to witness the creative process unfold throughout your celebration.
