When couples plan their wedding, one of the most meaningful decisions they might make is choosing a custom ketubah, the Jewish marriage contract that symbolizes their lifelong commitment. For contemporary artist Martin L. Benson, creating custom ketubot (plural of ketubah) is not only an art form, but also a spiritual practice.

ToggleMartin describes himself as “an artist deeply inspired by mystical traditions of all kinds.” Rooted in his Jewish background, he draws from the mystical and symbolic aspects of Judaism, infusing his work with elements of sacred geometry and spiritual abstraction. His art uses color and geometry to evoke calm, connection, and a meditative sense of wonder.
Like many creative journeys, Martin’s began close to home. “It all started when I made my first custom ketubah for my brother’s wedding,” he recalls. “It just snowballed from there.” What began as a heartfelt family gift evolved into a thriving artistic practice that now connects him to couples around the world.
Every custom ketubah Martin creates begins with conversation. “It always starts with a consultation,” he explains. “We talk about imagery, colors, and what moves them emotionally.” Clients explore his portfolio for inspiration, then collaborate on the design and text — choosing between traditional Hebrew, modern English, or a custom blend crafted with their rabbi.
Once the vision and language are finalized, Martin brings it to life through his signature combination of geometric precision and intuitive artistry.
For Martin, creating a custom ketubah is about honoring love in all its forms. “I always try to meet people where they are,” he says. “This is their work of art that they’ll have for their whole lives. I want them to look at it and always be reminded of the beauty and miracle of their love.”
He works thoughtfully with interfaith couples, LGBTQ+ partners, and anyone seeking inclusive or personalized ketubah language, ensuring that every client feels seen and celebrated.
For couples beginning their ketubah journey, Martin recommends starting early and staying communicative. “In general, from the first conversation to the finished work, it takes about 4–8 weeks,” he notes. “If clients respond quickly, it can move faster.”
His biggest piece of advice? “Make sure it’s something meaningful and beautiful. There are a lot of generic options out there, but this is something you’ll see almost every day of your life — something your family will cherish.”
If you’re commissioning a custom ketubah, start the process early so there’s time to finalize your text, colors, and layout before your wedding day.
While ketubot are a central part of his work, Martin’s creativity extends far beyond them. He’s also a contemporary fine artist, exhibiting in galleries and exploring themes of spirituality, color, and human connection. In addition, he hosts a podcast where he speaks with artists around the world about the intersection of art and the inner life.
“I’m so grateful to play a small role in people’s journeys,” Martin reflects. “To create something powerful and special to commemorate such a monumental moment in their lives — that’s an incredible honor.”
